The History of Satin

Satin, a smooth fabric similar to rayon or silk, has been used for centuries to make fine clothing and home furnishings.
Satin was first woven by the Chinese, and was a desirable fabric for the wealthy in Greece and Rome. During the Middle Ages, satin was only used for royal garments and priestly robes. This silk-like fabric is still very desirable in just about every part of the world, and there are a number of things that can be made with satin, including:

Dresses. Satin is used for all types of formal dresses, such as wedding or prom dresses, and are often used for bridesmaid and flower girl dresses.

Lingerie. This fabric can also be used for lingerie and intimate wear, including camisole and slips. Since satin is so light and flattering to the figure, many women are now wearing satin under business suits and blazers, since it counteracts the itchy feel of wool.

Curtains/ tablecloths. People also use satin to decorate their homes; there are a variety of curtains, tablecloths, sheets, and comforters made of satin that will add just the right accents to any room in your home. Satin has a very royal and elegant look to it, so pairing a satin cloth accent to anything from a classic cherry wood table, or a rustic, woodsy piece of furniture will compliment furniture nicely.

You can also use satin accent pieces in your clothing and bedding decorations. For instance, using a piece of satin fabric for a belt or headscarf will add a classy touch to any outfit, and you can sew a piece of satin fabric to the end of your comforter or the ending of your pillow cases for original bedding no one will have.

If you’re looking for satin fabric to create an original work of art of your own, want to find a new outfit for your wardrobe or your home furnishings, you can visit most fabric stores in your area to find satin samples you’ll love. For instance, JoAnn fabrics (which is located in most states) will most likely have the fabric that you need in a variety of colors and patterns, and you can use it for anything from creating seat covers for your dining room or kitchen. Hobby Lobby also has a wide variety of satin fabrics if you make your own clothing, or if you want to try your hand at creating your own home crafts from satin. You can also buy satin clothing and additional fabric from places like www.overstock.com, and www.e-waterbeds.com for satin sheets and comforters.
